Exemptions for charities under JobKeeper payment

The Federal Government has relaxed the eligibility requirements for charities to be eligible for the JobKeeper coronavirus wage subsidy, requiring charities to demonstrate a decline of 15% in annual turnover to be eligible for the payment.

Previously, not-for-profit organisations, charities and businesses that have been impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak and with an annual turnover of less than $1 billion had to demonstrate a 30% decline in their annual turnover, while those with an annual turnover of more than $1 billion had to demonstrate a 50% decline in turnover to be eligible. 

The exemption was announced over the weekend and means that charities registered with the Australian Charities and Non-for-profits Commission (ACNC) are exempt from meeting the 30% threshold. This includes charities with a turnover of more than $1 billion. Please note, this exemption is for charities only. Not-for-profit organisations that are not charities must meet the 30% or 50% thresholds, depending on their annual turnover.

Non-government schools and private vocational education providers are also eligible for the JobKeeper payment. 

The JobKeeper payment is part of a suite of measures by the Federal Government to assist businesses and not-for-profits to retain employees. It is valued at $1,500 per employee per fortnight and for up to six months.
