[Centres] Postal details held by RMS for trailers and motor vehicles

This email is directed to all Centres which have a registered trailer (horse
and/or box) or a registered truck/car.  

 

Under NSW law, these items must be registered in the name of either a person
or a company.  This legal requirement is met by having such items registered
in the name of RDA (NSW), but for practical reasons, the postal/contact
details are to be those of the Centre, not State Office.

 

We have just been notified that there is still an issue with the
registration details held by the NSW Roads & Maritime Services in respect of
some of these trailers/vehicles.

 

By way of background for new Committees, some time ago, a Centre went to
their local RMS to register a trailer.  As best as we can understand, it
appears that the staff there noticed that there were a number of trailers
and vehicles registered in the name of RDA (NSW), but all had different
postal addresses.  At least some, if not all, of those addresses were then
changed to that of the Centre which had just paid the renewal for their
Centre's trailer.  As a result, subsequent renewal notices were sent to that
Centre, which is how that error was discovered.

 

We have just received notification that, in RMS correcting the address for
service, it appears that an error has been made in that at least two
trailers had their postal addresses changed to the wrong Centre's postal
address.  This has resulted in one Centre inadvertently paying for the
registration of the trailer which belonged to another Centre.  This was
discovered when the second Centre went to register their trailer and were
notified by the RMS that their trailer has already been registered.
Unfortunately, that would indicate that the Centre which paid that
registration fee did not register its own trailer but that for another
Centre and may therefore have been using their trailer unregistered.

 

That particular error is in the process of being rectified.  However, it
indicates that there may still be a problem.  

 

To ensure that this issue is not repeated, could all Centres which have
registered vehicles and/or trailers please check to make sure that the RMS
holds your correct postal address details and that the details are for the
correct vehicle/trailer.
