Great grants for regional areas

This edition, we’re highlighting two great grants on offer from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) for remote, rural and regional communities across Australia.  

Heywire Youth Innovation Grants 

FRRR is offering $115,000 nationally and an additional $35,000 for Queensland-based projects that act on issues that matter to regional, remote, and rural youth. Projects that will be considered include those that address boredom relief, access to mental health support, ensuring young people’s voices are heard, and support for young people with a disability.  Applications close June 7, 2023.  

In a Good Place Grants

Remote, rural and regional communities across Australia can apply for grants of up to $20,000 for community-driven mental health and wellbeing projects. Expressions of interest close May 17, 2023.

Stay alert for budget updates 

The federal budget is traditionally handed down in the second week of May, with states and territories issuing theirs between May and August each year.

Australian community organisations are on high alert amid concerns of tightening state and federal budgets.

Advocates are warning that any cuts to the community sector will impact the whole nation and are urging groups to lobby hard for a better deal for the sector. Organisations should be ready to apply for eligible funds released in the coming months.

CIC 2023: A search for the soul of the nation 

Hundreds of delegates have already locked in their place at this year’s Communities in Control conference, as Our Community celebrates the 21st anniversary of the biggest gig on the social sector calendar.

The 2023 event (May 29–30) is one not to miss, as the not-for-profit world’s biggest movers and shakers gather to hear Australia’s most progressive thinkers and doers “search for the soul of the nation”. 

Just one highlight among 14 unforgettable speakers and performers will be the launch of a powerful new free tool developed by Per Capita, to help community organisations fight for a fairer nation.

Could a robot write your next funding application? 

Not-for-profits and charities are leaping onto the ChatGPT bandwagon for a range of reasons, and among the top uses is generating grant applications, faster. 

Our Community data scientist Dr Mifsud said ChatGPT and other AI “language models” had the potential to assist groups with basic writing tasks, including grant applications. He said ChatGPT could be used to assist with brainstorming ideas, matching applications to funding criteria, rephrasing pitches or reports, understanding funder requests, and more.

But Dr Mifsud cautioned that ChatGPT can be an unreliable assistant, with errors liable to be hidden by a “veneer of perfect English”. He suggested users cross-check any material generated by ChatGPT with trusted sources.

Mother's Day fundraising ideas

Mother’s Day tends to be untapped when it comes to annual fundraising. That means there is ample opportunity to leverage this day of gift-giving to bring joy to mothers and make an even greater impact for your organisation. There are myriad of ways to fundraise on Mother's Day, particularly for women’s causes such as breast cancer or women’s shelters.
