Most popular grant categories in 2023

Our 2023 data reveals the most commonly funded grant categories were:

1. Community development

2. Education

3. Health

4. Arts and culture

5. Economic development

If your organisation's work doesn't neatly align with these categories, consider the broader impact of your mission. There could be a connection you haven't explored yet.

Dive into our help sheet <https://email.ourcommunity.com.au/t/r-l-tijuila-bjdhduksj-v/> “Casting the Grants Net Wide” to uncover potential funding opportunities that might not be on your radar. This resource is designed to help you think creatively about your projects and how they intersect with these leading grant categories, broadening your eligibility for grants.

Costs most likely to be funded by grant-makers in 2023

According to our 2023 data, grantmakers are more likely to fund the below costs than others, such as advocacy, network building and collaboration, and travel:

1. Program costs

2. Capacity building

3. Equipment

4. Operations

5. Capital costs.

Notably, operational costs are attracting more funding than in 2022, suggesting that grantmakers are responding to the needs of organisations for business-as-usual funding.

This shift reflects a growing recognition of the importance of supporting the day-to-day functions that keep organisations running effectively.

Prepare your grants strategy for 2024: top tips

Understanding the timelines of funders is crucial. Application periods for grants vary depending on the funder, the program, and the type of project or initiative being funded.

Here are some timeline trends to be aware of:

Government grants: Typically aligned with budget cycles, government grants in Australia are often announced post-budget release, with application periods spanning several months. The Funding Centre provides <https://email.ourcommunity.com.au/t/r-l-tijuila-bjdhduksj-e/> budget overviews here to guide you on upcoming funding directions.

Community and philanthropic grants: These vary, with some grantmakers operating grant rounds and others accepting applications year-round. Always check each funder's guidelines for their schedules.

Corporate grants: Corporate funding doesn't always adhere to a set cycle, with some corporations offering themed rounds that change annually.

Special initiatives and disaster relief: Keep an eye out for announcements on special funding rounds in response to events or disasters, such as those on the Funding Centre's <https://email.ourcommunity.com.au/t/r-l-tijuila-bjdhduksj-s/> disaster and covid assistance portal.

Staying informed

1. Monitor government, philanthropic, and corporate websites for funding cycles and guideline updates (we do that for you at the Funding Centre so you don’t have to!)

2. Use our up-to-date grants database and subscribe to the EasyGrants newsletter for regular alerts

3. Use our grant tracking tools and maintain a grantseeking calendar with the Funding Centre dashboard

4. Network with your peers for tips on emerging opportunities.

Preparation is key: plan your calendar around typical funder timelines, allowing for project planning and proposal development. Keep abreast of any changes directly from funders’ official channels to ensure your application aligns with their current processes.

Our Community calls for federal grants management overhaul

The Funding Centre’s parent organisation, Our Community, says it's time the federal government made a major “technological and cultural shift” in how it manages $26 billion in community sector grants each year.

Learn more about Our Community’s submission to the federal government <https://email.ourcommunity.com.au/t/r-l-tijuila-bjdhduksj-yd/> here.

That’s all from us. As we wrap up, we just want to say a big thanks to you for all the hard work you do. Kick back, relax, and have a fantastic holiday – you've earned it! See you next year.
