Carriage Driving

RDA (NSW) Carriage Driving offers individuals with disabilities the opportunity to learn how to drive carriage horses. This unique program provides a safe, inclusive environment that accommodates both ambulant participants and those who use wheelchairs. Whenever possible, specially built wheelchair-accessible carriages are used to ensure accessibility for all.
Benefits of Carriage Driving
Carriage driving is more than just a skill; it’s a transformative experience with numerous benefits:
- Improved balance and coordination: Strengthens physical abilities through practice.
- Increased independence and confidence: Builds self-reliance and a sense of achievement.
- Relaxation and rhythmic movement: Encourages calmness and well-being.
- Freedom and outdoor enjoyment: Offers a sense of exhilaration and connection with nature.
- Social interaction: Provides opportunities to connect with others and be part of a community.
- Competition opportunities: Advanced drivers can refine their skills in decision-making, accuracy, and control for competitive events.
Safety measures for Carriage Driving at RDA (NSW)
RDA (NSW) places the utmost importance on safety during all carriage driving sessions. Key safety protocols include:
- The Whip: An experienced, accredited RDA (NSW) driver (called the Whip) sits beside the participant in the carriage. Both have a set of reins, allowing the Whip to maintain control if needed.
- Ground Helpers: Each session requires three ground helpers to ensure smooth and safe operations:
- The Groom: Responsible for holding the horse when necessary.
- Helper 2: Assists the driver with getting in and out of the vehicle.
- Helper 3: Supports the Whip’s instructions as needed.
